Greetings Gang, would one of our Bomber Pilot experten please help me with any info on this pilot, Walther-Peer Fellgiebel's book, "Elite of the Third Reich, Recipients of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross 1939-1945: A Reference" ISBN 1-874622-46-9 has the following passage. Feldw., Flugzeugfhr, 14./KG27 "Boelcke" date of award 17.4.45.
I googled and gave up after 6 or 7 pages of dead ends.

Reason I ask is.... #1, I am interested in what led to his receiving the KC at this late date in the War?
#2, My Autograph collecting partner sent off a request for signed items to him 5 (Five)!!!!!! years ago, and just this week received some signatures back. Talk about a waiting time??? He had totally forgotten he sent it so long ago, Just goes to show you never know? and a little patience, or alot in this case...goes a long way!!!!
Thanks for any help you members can give me!
Again his name is Günther Bierbrauer, served in 14./KG27.
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I can find a Günther Bierbrauer (not Bierbauer)

Interestingly he is listed as a beobachter when he received his DKiG 12Jul42 with 3./KG 27

check the following link

http://www.das-ritterkreuz.de/index_sea ... Bierbrauer

there is a picture of him and all the data is the same as your source. I can't make out his abzeichen clearly (I always have trouble distinguishing between flugzeugführer and beobachter abzeichen in small photos) so he may have remustered to pilot from observer or possibly one of the sources is in error (or he could be a combined pilot/observer though I thought this was only possible for aufklärer).

As for the reason for being awarded the RK I don't know but he was obviously very experienced as in the photo he is wearing the Frontflugspange in Gold mit anhänger which for kampfflieger was awarded after 300 ff.

Best Regards

Andy (F)

So Andy...Any thoughts on why the long delay between awards? Perhaps he was wounded or posted to pilot school? Or? To be honest I have not been able to find much more on him

It's not unusual to have long periods between awards, there could be any number of reasons, the two examples you give are both possible, although he could just as easily been flying ops continuously between the award of the DKiG and RK. Short of asking the man or looking at his flugbuch we'll probably never know.

Best Regards

Perhaps I can ask him, then again after the long wait described above? I wonder if anyone has ever really asked him about his time in the Luftwaffe? The man may be ready to tell all?
I will see if I can get his addy from my friend and perhaps ask him his thoughts? if ever anything comes of this I will post here.
