Andy and others

I noted in the DKiG holders for Recon, Maritime, etc that there is an Ofw Willi Hagen awarded one on 30/1/42. Is there anything at all else known about this guy? The database notes he flew for 1./606. I have a note for an Ofw Willi Hagen flying with 3./906 who was MIA flying a Do 18G, 8L+CL, WNr. 0890, on 13/6/41.

Either I've messed up good and proper (more than likely ) or else it's a pretty good coincidence two guys with the same rank flew with the same air arm (which was never that big to begin with!)

Anything further on this matter would be appreciated.

Hi Adam,

Details I have for 13Jun41 show Ofw Willi Hagan 3/906 as KIA. It's quite possible that the DKiG for Ofw Willi Hagen on 30Jan42 is a posthumous award and that the unit (1/606) is an error.

You state that he was MIA, does your source mention that he returned (zur?ck)

Having checked the DKiG info the unit is definately given as 1/606 (the source may always be in error).

On the other hand there may have been two Ofw Willi Hagens'. Although Hagen isn't a common name it isn't rare either.

As you say quite a coincidence.

Best Regards

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that. Though is it really possible that the a posthumous award took so long to come through?

As for the MIA part, unfortunately all I have is the poor guys name and that he failed to return from a sortie 13/6/41. I don't know the remainder of the crew or even where the sortie was to. I don't suppose you have any of that?

Thanks anyway,

Hi Adam,

Here are the crew details for 8L+CL

Ofw Willi Hagen (F) KIA
Lt Helmut Ohlendorf (Bo) KIA
Uffz Fritz Augustin (Bf) KIA
Ofw August Conizianer (Bs) KIA

Location is given as just Norwegian Sea. Reason for loss unknown.

As for posthumous awards the time can be many months after the date of death.

Best Regards

Andy Fletcher
