I have a photo in my collection of a crashed landed He-111 from Kampfgeschwader 55 "Greif” taken in southern Russia in the summer of 1942 but before the August 23, 1942 air attack against Stalingrad.

I can see on the bomber the KG 55 emblem, also I can read the first three of the four letter Luftwaffe code system on the plane, being G1 + A. The G1 code is black and the letter A is either white or yellow, I’m 99% sure is it white.

Does someone have a listing of KG 55 losses during noted time period and that also reference the the four letter code and crew member names? (The bomber belly land intact in Russian held territory so it’s likely the crew would be listed as MIA and not KIA.)

I have both of the following books; some basic info is listed but not linking loss date to the Luftwaffe four letter codes.

Kampfgeschwader 55 "Greif", Eine Chronik aus Dokumenten und Berichten 1937-1945. Dierich, Wolfgang (2002).

Luftwaffe Codes, Markings & Units 1939-1945. Barry C.Rosch

Any help would be appreciated.

Russ,

A while ago there was a softback book published on KG 55 probably by Air Research Pubs or one of their associate companies. I believe I have a copy of the losses recorded somewhere. Unfortunately, I cannot lay my hands on them this evening.

I’m 70% sure the last letter is D.

I was told there is a book out but only shows the losses in the West and not the East.

Russ,

You may well be right.

Still can't find the d$%& thing anyway.

Have the loss returns for this period so will start to look through them and if I find anything (legible) will post here.
