Hi

This emblem has appeared in an eBay Luftwaffe photo album http://www.ebay.com/itm/TERRIFIC-LUFTWAFFE-SOLDIERS-WARTIME-PHOTO-ALBUM-RUSSIA-ITALY-/370555733455?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5646d7c5cf. There are not many aircraft in the album, so it might not be an air unit. Aircraft which are present are an Hs126 and Ju87. The emblem is placed next to photos taken in Italy, although again there might not be a direct connection.

Any ideas?

regards

Ian

I have been doing some research on this emblem. I assume that the letters in the top left hand corner are GdS. I can only find this in use with Umschulstaffel GdS. The unit had Ju87s and was used to reform 8./StG151 in August 1944…. But I can find absolutely nothing else about this unit? ….it could explain the Ju87s in the album. Any further details on this unit and/or the emblem would still be much appreciated.

Ian,

I have found reference to this emblem in the AJ-Press publication "Luftwaffe 1935-45" vol 5.

Page 74 has this entry

This is identified as Verbindungs - General der Schlachtflieger

Hope that this is of help.

Many thanks Andy. I’m pleased to see I was correct about the ‘GDS’, although not about the actual unit. I assume that this was a headquarters liaison unit communicating with the various Schlachtflieger units? That would probably help to explain the wide geographical range of photos in the album….. although I can find absolutely nothing about this unit in my sources.

Cheers
Ian

Ian,

Just had a look in Rosch - Luftwaffe Codes, Markings and Units - nothing there. Also nothing immediately leaps out from his "Luftwaffe Support Units"

Also looked at the Luftwaffe Colours volume on Ground attack units - no joy there either.
