This emblem appears on a wrecked Fi156 from eBay http://www.ebay.de/itm/Flugzeug-Fieseler-Storch-Bruchlandung-Staffelwappen-WK-II-/150692273825?pt=Militaria&hash=item2315f59ea1. It look quite like 7./Erg.TG (Ketley and Rolfe #793) although not identical. Has this emblem been seen elsewhere?

Regards

Ian

Ian,

I think that your item is similar to this

I captured this in 2004!

Given that looks like a high ranking officer in the back it is possible that this is another Verbindungs unit or a Luftflotte/Fliegerkorps operated aircraft.

Off to see if I can identify the code....

Ian,

Looks like its from Flugber./Lw.Kdo.Ost, see below from Barry Rosch's "Luftwaffe Support Units" (page 33)

Many Thanks Andy. I am sure that you have got this one solved. It is still rather difficult to determine exactly what is on the emblem. It is a shame that Rosch wasn’t able to provide an illustration in his book. Presumably good quality pictures of the emblem have not been easily found. The best version we have here is your 2004 photo. It looks like a cartoon aircraft, but I can’t work out what is happening in the cockpit area and in front of the aircraft.

Cheers
Ian

Hi

In an attempt to ease the confusion, I have probably added to it. ….although may have got an answer..

Rosch has another photo of another Fi156 with the same emblem (2009, p. 52). It looks like the same photo as your earlier image. In this example it is explicitly claimed that this is the emblem of Kurierstaffel 11. This unit supported the 8th Armee and saw service in Belgium/France in 1940 and Russia from 1941. This then fits with all of the photos.

This does not totally explain the a/c coded 8C+__ with this emblem from p. 33 of Rosch. However the caption here indicates that the unit/aircraft came from an earlier unit.
I suggest then that the emblem is then either that of Kurierstaffel 11 or is a more general Kurierstaffel emblem, but in either case also seen on a/c transferred from these units.
