Have just looked at Squadron Signal's "German Cruisers of World War II" which has this photo on page 34 and describes it thus:-

"An Ar 196 is either being placed into or taken out of Prinz Eugen's hanger. This occured while the heavy cruiser operated in the Baltic in 1944. The hanger's roof retracted during aircraft extraction or insertion. There was room for two aircraft in the hanger with wings detached and stowed separately."

The aircraft and staffel letter of the second machine looks to be AL - though which ship it is being loaded onto is anyone's guess.

Any chance of a clearer scan of the tail area and fuselage?

Adam,

The image was "enhanced" using various software applications so this is probably the best it will be.

However, I am now having trouble finding the original image (prior to my "enhancements"). When I do I will post it here for you to look at.

I was obviously not thinking when I posted that - thanks for clearing it up, Junker. Of course 5./196 is 6W+?N...

http://cgi.ebay.de/Wasserflugzeug-2-WK-Admiral-Hipper-12-8-5-cm-Marine_W0QQitemZ380057432526QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item380057432526&_trkparms=72%3A1132%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

If the seller of the above is correct, then it appears the mystery ship in the second picture is the Hipper...

Adam,

Without evidence to the contrary I would have to go with "Hipper" class although I think from other entries on the Bord. 196 page on the Wiki we can rule out Blucher..

Somewhere i've seen a posting on a forum giving th ecodes for the aircraft on Hipper.

Many thanks for finding this though.
