A selection of photos of a SCHNEIDER-GÖTTINGEN camera has appeared on eBay http://www.ebay.de/itm/Grose-Flugzeug-Foto-Kamera-Reihenbildner-2-WK-Deutsch-/230698989988?pt=Transportwesen&hash=item35b6bb39a4. Any info on its use would be appreciated.

Ian

Ian,

According to the plate it is an Rb12.5/7x9 it may be that just the lense was made by Schneider at Göttingen. I had a look at their web-site but strangely it does not mention much about 1933-45.....( Volk made a HandKamera that used a similar Schneider Xenon lense)

It does not appear on the LDv 488/6 Schedule of Photographic equipment reproduced on pg 85 of Wadman's "Aufklaerer v1 - Luftwaffe Reconnaissance Aircraft and Units 1935-1941"

Have sent off an e-mail to someone who may be able to positively Id this.

Regarding the photo identified as an Rb 12.5/7x9 - I have now found this in a different publication identified as an Rb 32/7x9

Thanks Andy. I would be interested to find out what other aircraft used it, and when. Your link also appears to show it in a Bf109. I have attached a few others from the same collection.

It cannot be a Rb 32/7x9. If it were it would have a long lens tube (32cm focal length).
See http://www.deutscheluftwaffe.de/instrumente/katalog/diverse/gross/FI38630-3.gif

Further Info:
Hk (Handkammer) is a handheld camera. The first number gives the lens' s focal lenth, in this case it's 12,5cm, the "7x9" gives the fim /negative size in cm. A little bit bigger then consumer cameras using 120 type film
Rb (Reihenbildner) is a mapping camera that is mounted in an airplane. They could be mounted in pairs for stereoscopic viewing or in a pair of cameras with different focal length for overview and/ or detail views (camera with a longer lens).
Typically these Rb cameras would be mounted into a/c that would have a problems hauling a bigger i.e. Rb 50/30 camera, like the Fw190A-5/U, Bf109G-4, G-6, G-8.

The code "gxn" stands for "Fritz Völk, Mechanische Werkstätten, Berlin SO36".
The code "nze" stands for "Fritz Völk, Mechanische Werkstätten, Zweigwerk Wittenberg". The Rb32/7x9 was one of their products.
Most likely the camera is built under license on and or for i.e. Carl Zeiss, Jena.
Indeed the lens is made by Schneider, Göttingen. There is also Schneider-Kreuznach
