I know that this is slightly "of" subject but...

I am currently reading Kevin Wilson's "Men of Air - the doomed youth of Bomber Command" (Weidenfeld & Nicolson) and have to say I find it thoroughly enlightening about the feelings of individual aircrew facing the horrors of the 1944 raids into Germany, and in support of the normandy landings, where their life expectancy was approx 6 weeks.

A thoroughly moving account of operations during 1944 from the crew perspective, it also include a chapter covering the Great Escape.

This is a book that I would recommend to anyone.

(I know that I have Kevin's previous work - Bomber Boys (about the Bomber Command raids into Germany during 1943) - as a christmas present.

Let me just say - these books make you think. I worked with a gentleman who had been a nav on Wellingtons and had lost his brother over Berlin - from reading this book I now have a slight understanding of what they went through.
