Aeroplane Monthly reports that a He 115 has been discovered at the bottom of Hafrfjord north of Sola in Norway.

The aircraft is 8L+FH operated by KuGr 906. This aircraft sank onreturning from a sortie on Dec 28 1942.

Can anyone add more details about this plane and it's crew for the last sortie?

I can be wrong, but I seem to remember the full story has been coverd in a german magazin
(FLUGZEUG, Flugzeug Classic or Jet & Prop) some time ago. Unfortunalely I have access to my library to help you out. Maybe you would want to post this question at http://forum.luftarchiv.de/?

The a/c was lost in a landing accident at Stavanger-Sola-See after returning from an operational mission (possibly convoy escort). On landing the plane swung to the left and both floats were torn off. All the crew managed to get out before the a/c overturned then sank. There was a salvage attempt which recovered the floats and an engine but the airframe was said to be 90% while the engines were 50% The loss is not listed in the normal loss lists and as there is no crew injury I've not been able to track the crew list down. Unfortunately the KTBs for 1./906 don't cover that far into the war. Why it was never put under normal loss list procedures, I don't know.

The loss is reported in a telexed message from 1./906 to Gen.d.Lw.b.Ob.d.M. on 28.12.42 at 17.20 hours, (Nr. 2336/42). The report from 1./906 was given the reference B.Nr. Gen.d.Lw.b.Od.d.M. 7697/42 g

I have the WNr. as 2398

Hope this helps...

Adam

P.S. Australia receives that particular magazine a month behind N. hemisphere so I might be repeating some stuff. Inversely, if there is anything that contradicts the above then let me know

Adam,

You beat me to it as you seem to have had more success accessing the site than I did.
Couldn't get on from here at all last night and it took me over an hour this morning.

Anyway as Adam mentioned in his post, as it takes forever for magazines to get to Australia he'd be most appreciative if someone could scan the article for him.

Cheers

Dave

Off topic but I've also had problems accessing the discussion forum (but not the site as a whole). Also I'm no longer being automatically logged in. I've tried deleting the cookie and logging back in (ticking the automatic login box) but to no avail.

Can someone tell me on which page this info was found on. I went through the August issue of Aeroplane and can't find it at all.

Alternatively, if someone has a copy of the article if they'd be so kind as to scan it for me that would be great

TIA

Adam

Adam,

This was the September edition.

I have just bought the October one and it was in the previous one which I may have given away.
