I am aware that this is (part of) a well-known photo of a Heinkel He 177 (source; eBay), but I cannot find any solutions as to the code K9+NL. There are two apparent issues;
- The white ‘9’, which is obviously not standard, does not fit with the staffel letter (unless it is yellow ‘9’), although it could indicate the group (but unlikely).
- K9 was the code Aufklärungsgruppe ObdL, but appears to have been out of use when this aircraft was in use. A possible candidate could be FAGr. 5, which had Junkers Ju290 in use in a maritime role. But these were coded 9V+ and I cannot find a 3 staffel.
I have seen the N painted red in reproductions, but I think that this can be ignored?
Are there any solutions?

Regards

Ian

Ian,

Had a nose around some of my books and found reference to this He 177 A-5 in KG 200 (The Luftwaffe's most secret unit ) by Thomas and Ketley.

Page 185 lists aircraft used by KG 200 and related units - He 177A-5 K9+NL 3./VfH Oranienburg.

VfH - Versuchstelle für Höhenfluge

Unfortunately, I cannot find reference to this aircraft in Griehl's He177 274 277 book including the appendix listing aircraft by Werk Nummer.

Versuchstelle für Höhenfluge became (according to the KG 200 book) 3. /Versuchverband Ob.d.L until Feb 1944 and 3. /Versuchverband OKL from May 1944.

Looks like I need to change the unit code page on the Wiki....

Thanks Andy.

I wonder when this photo/code dates from. I believe that Versuchverband Ob.d.L had been Aufklärungsgruppe Ob.d.L and Oranienburg was one of their bases. That could help explain the use of the K9+ code. I note that 3.(F)/Ob.d.L became 3./Aufkl.Gr. 100 in Jan 1943. I assume that codes were altered for the new unit. That would effectively free up a K9+_L code, so perhaps 3./VfH Ob.d.L was effectively a replacement for 3./Aufkl.Gr. Ob.d.L?

Cheers

Ian

Ignore the code chaps, its a post-war photoshop/edit and the codes are completely bogus, as is the ordinance. The original image is of He177A-5, WNr.550062 which was allocated the RAF Serial TS439, and here is the original unaltered image:

Thanks Peter, it appears that several authors, websites and decal makers have been fooled by this one.

Cheers
