Apologies for picking up on this so late. Anything is possible in theory but the units deployed in Italy and their equipment are pretty well established. It's a bit before my research period but in Autumn 1943 Ju 88s formed the bulk of the night bombing effort with lesser numbers of Do 217s and (IIRC) some KG 26 He 111s weighing in from Southern France. Night reconnaissance was done by Ju 88s. Misidentification at night was endemic and it does complicate research.

The principal base for bombers prior to Allied landings on the Italian mainland was the complex of airfields around Foggia. From there the bombers pulled back to northern bases such as Cameri, Villafranca, Villaorba, Aviano and Bergamo; KG 100 Do 217s had been in Foggia but moved to France. Bomber units in Italy on 20 October 1943 were Stab, I. and II./KG 30; Stab, I. and II./KG 54; Stab, I. and II./KG 76.
