Hi everybody!

Could anybody tell me what Luftwaffe units carried out investigation of Moscow area in June-July 1941? I know there were two staffels: 1.(F)/122 and 2.(F)/122. But it seems to me Aufkl.Gr.d.Ob.d.L took part too. Could anybody confirm that? If so what staffels?

Thanks in advance,
Mihail.

Excuse me please for my broken English.

Mihail,

Firstly, welcome to the board.

If you refer to the Luftwaffedata web site for 122 operations on pages http://www.luftwaffedata.co.uk/html/jun41.html and http://www.luftwaffedata.co.uk/html/jul41.html you will see some details about operations including at least one loss while on a sortie to Moscow.

Unfortunately I cannot help with other Luftwaffe Recce units - although there are other members of the board who may well be able to assist you.

Hi wekusta,

I've checked this pages and founded the terrible thing! According to "Neizvestnaya bitva v nebe Moskvy in 1941-1942" by D.Khazanov (the single book I have about this theme) Aufkl.Gr.122 lost three Ju 88s in Moscow area in June-July 1941
- F6+NH on July 2nd;
- F6+AO and F6+AK on July 25th, which were shot down by Kuzmenko and Mihailov of 41 iap and by Loginov and Vasiliev of 11 iap... Any comments?

regards,
Mihail.

Hello Mihail and welcome to the board.

The 3.(F)/33 were in Russia during the winter of 1941/42 and carried out a number of reconnaissance sorties around Moscow (mostly checking road and rail traffic) before moving back to the West in the spring of 1942.

During the course of these operations the Staffel lost about nine aircraft.

Hope that this is of use to you.

Regards

Dave

Hi again Mihail,

I forgot to mention that during many of these missions by the 3.(F)/33, the aircraft would often carry two or four 50 or 100 kg bombs on the underwing bomb carriers to use against road and rail traffic.

Dave

Hi Mihail,

I have just had a look at my operations information for the 3.(F)/33 which states that their missions to Moscow and the Moscow area began as early as mid-July 1941.

Hi Dave,

Thanks a lot for your replies, very interesting information... About Ju 88A-5 of Erg.(F)/122 which failed to return from a recce mission to the Moscow area on June 25th, 1941: It was lost not in Moscow area, because russians discovered first german reconnaisance aircraft there only on July 1st.

Best regards,
Mihail.

Hello Mihail,

I will look in my files to see what information I have on reconnaissance missions by the AufklGr.Ob.d.L. over Moscow and if I find anything I will pass it on to you.

Also, would you happen to have any information on any of the the nine Ju 88s lost
by the 3.(F)/33 around the Moscow area between June 1941 and January 1942?
The first was lost on 27 June and the last on 17 January.

The reason that I ask is that I'm preparing a website on the complete history of the 3.(F)/33 so anything I can obtain to add to the information that I already have
would be most appreciated.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

Look forward to the 3(F)/33 website.

Will it contain a complete listing of Staffelkapitäne?

Best Regards

Andy Fletcher

A/c of Aufkl.Ob.d.L. made first reconnaissance sortie over Moscow area on 22nd June, 1941 and took photos of city of Moscow from 10000 m. Is it true? Could anybody confirm that? Any information (type of a/c, WNr., etc.) would be highly appreciated.

Hi Mihail,

Reconnaissance flights to Moscow and the surrounding areas were also carried out by the 1.(F)/33 between July 1941 and very early in 1942.
I'm currently in contact with a former member of the 1.(F)/33 so I will see if he has any information about these flights.
If he has I will let you know.

Regards

Dave
