Kevin,

In "Luftwaffe Im Focus" No 3 there is a "portrait of Hptmn. Ernst Fach who was Staffelkapitan of 9.(Eis)/KG 3.

By April 1943 Fachs had flown his 300th combat sortie and destroyed 63 locomotives. By May 1943 he was additionally credited with 8 bridges, 19 tanks, 32 artilery pieces, 96 trucks and 9 transport trains (including two munitions trains), making him one of KG 3s most successful pilots.

He was killed on 15 May 1943 in the crash of Ju 88C-6 360366 - his crew were also killed.

By May 1943 Udo Cortes had destroyed 77 locomotives.

Andy,

It mentions the following members of the Staffel:-

1.Ofw Herbert Roewer failed to return from 305th Combat mission on 11 May 1943 in Ju 88C-6 360348.

2. 9.(Eis)/KG3s first Staffelkapitan, Hptm Otto Meichsner failed to return from a combat sortie on 11 jan 1943 in an Ju 88A-4 5K+BT (2291)- shot down by Russian AA fire 10km west of Kantemirovka.

NB the Awards listing for Fach is as follows:-

10.11.39 EKII
1.6.40 EKI
11.5.41 Ehrenpokal fur besondere Leistungen im Luftkrieg.
22.5.42 DKiG
15.4.43 Anhanger zur goldenen Frontflugspange.
15.5.43 Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes.

Great stuff Andy. I didn't have the details of Fach's Frontflugspange mit Anhänger.

I presume Fach took over command of 9.(Eis.)/KG 3 after Meichsner's death. Does it say whether he was already a member of the staffel? He previously served with 6./KG 3 (where he received his DKiG)

Röwer was also a DKiG recipient, having been awarded it on 20Oct42 (with 4./KG 3).

Cheers

Just had a look on http://www.das-ritterkreuz.de and Röwer also was awarded the RK on 03Jul43. However his date of death is given as 05Mar43. I'd be inclined to believe the magazine article. I'll ask over on TOCH and see if one of the guys has the correct date on their loss database.

Interestingly his name is given as Röwer in the DKiG listing but Roewer on the above site, both of which are in German.

Andy,

The article states that Fach was promoted Hauptmann while with 6. St.
and then transfered to 9. St.

The article then states that Fach flew III./KG 3s 10,000th mission on 4 Sep 1942 , a raid on Zubtsov.

Soon after Fach assumed command of 9(Eis)/KG3 it was converted to a Train Busting staffel and was re-equipped with Ju 88 C-6s.

A photo accompanies the article which shows the tail of Udo Cortes' Ju 88C-6 5K+RT (360379) there are markings on the fin accounting for 81 trains and 2 aircraft. This is undated.

The article confirms Röwer's RK as being awarded posthumously on 3 Jul 43.

Date for Röwer's death confirmed as 11May43 (by Jim P.), same as in the article.

Aircraft was coded 5K+BT (yellow B).

Found out a bit more about Meischner.

He served as an instructor at LKS Dresden during 1939, as Verbindungsoffizier 10.(kroat.)/KG 3 early 1942 and was awarded the DKiG posthumously on 23Jan43.

So, is there any further info on Luftwaffe train busters that can be added? This subject would probably make for a very interesting short book?

The next installment of the DKiG database should hopefully include all kampfflieger recipients including those that flew with the anti rail units, though you will have to wait a while for their actual aircrew functions to be added.

Cheers
