Hi guys,

Please find attached some reconnaissance notes cut and pasted from my air war Italy notes, for the period 3 September 1943 to 21 January 1944. This is very rough and unedited, but hopefully will be of interest. There are plenty of Ju 88 and Me 410 losses matched up with Allied claims, plus details on operations by A.Gr. 33, 122 and 123, and Wekusta 26. Sources are included at the bottom.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Andy,

Just goes to show you I should check this forum (my own) first and not Mr Evans' one....

Many thanks for this will start comparing with items in my 122 history.

As noted in my PM to you on the LEMB I have sent a copy to Dave Wadman.

Many thanks

Just to add some information to Andrew’s document posted above relating to the loss of Ju 88 D-1 W.Nr. 430854, 8H+IL of the 3.(F)/33 on 5 September 1943. The crew consisted of Uffz. Hermann Müller, Uffz. Heinz Stolte, Uffz. Josef Lisinski and Georg Kalbling and their scheduled mission a shipping reconnaissance of the Oran – Phillippville convoy route. Their reconnaissance flight pattern required the aircraft to be flown on a zig-zag course at low-level and while executing a turn at the end of one leg the aircraft touched the water shattering the propeller blades and leaving Müller no option but to ditch the crippled aircraft. After spending a few days adrift in their dinghy, the crew were rescued by an Allied launch and made P/Ws. For Müller & Stolte it had been their first operational sortie with the Staffel.
At the risk of a bit of shameless self-promotion, the full story of this incident can be found on pp.84 -86 of Aufklärer Vol.2 in the Classic Luftwaffe Colours series. Also – for those of you interested in the Aufklärungsflieger of WW II, the full stories of the 3.(F)/33 and 2.(F)/123 will be coming to a website near you in the not-too-distant future.

Cheers
Dave Wadman

Andrew

Only just noticed this!

Really helpful information and many thank indeed for taking the time to post it up for all to see and use.

I have a Wehrpass to a Beobacter who flew with 2./122 and 1./123 over that period and your information will help greatly in the research of this.

Regards Richard.

Hi Richard,

Glad it was of use. I'll provide an updated version at some point in the future.
